Igloolik
is the geographic center of Nunavut. The present settlement dates back to the 1950's, though its history started 4'000 years ago. Igloolik has an active community, dedicated to preserving its cultural roots.

Rankin Inlet
located on the west coast of Hudson Bay, is Nunavut's second largest community It was once a mining town in the mid-1950's. After the closure of the mines in 1962, a pottery project was started and though shortlived, has been revived in recent years.

Arviat
also located on the west coast of Hudson Bay, south of Rankin Inlet, takes ist name from the Inuktitut for bowhead whale. Due to its location and rich waters, it was a popular summer meeting place.

Kuujjuaraapik
is located on the east coast of Hudson Bay. It is a village at the mouth of Great Whale River in Arctic Quebec (Nunavik). Inuit, Cree, Naskapi and non-Natives number among the 9'500 inhabitants of Nunavik.

Umiujaq
is north of Kuujjuaraapik, also on the Hudson Bay's east coast. It is on the border of the Arctic tundra and Forest tundra region.

Inukjuak
situated on the coast of Hudson Bay is one of the 16 villages in Nunavik. The region of Nunavik covers 550'00 square kilometers. Nunavik has abundant lakes and rivers.

Povungnituk
north of Inukjuak, on the coast as well, is above the 58th parellel, where one finds only shrublike flora in the Arctic tundra.

Akulivik
is between Povungnituk and Ivujivik, all situated on the coast of the Ungava Peninsula. The area was carved by a passing glacier ages ago.

Ivujivik
is Quebec's most northern community, 1'900 kilometers from Montreal, on the tip of the Ungava Peninsula.

Cape Dorset
located on the west coast of Baffin Island, is widely known as the most productive art producing community of Nunavut. In Inuktitut its name describes the high stony hills behind and above the town.

Iqaluit
is the busy capital of Nunavut. Its airport connects, not only the other communities of Nunavut with the south, but also Greenland. It first became known to the outside world as Frobisher Bay, when it was put on official government maps.

Nuuk
is a city located on the southwest coast of Greenland, the world's largest island. Until the middle 1800's Inuit migrated to Greenland.

Anadyr
is the capital of the Autonomous Region of Chukotka, Siberia. There are now approximately 10'000 people living in this city at the mouth of the Anadyr River at the Bering Sea. In the late summer, many take their boat up the river for an outing of berry picking, mushroom gathering and fishing .

Uelen
has a population of 1'000 whose income is largely dependant on art. It is an art center on the Bering Strait, known for its beautiful walrus tusk carvings and etchings. Though difficult to reach, it is not unusual for artists from other regions to spend time working at the studio.

Dudinka
founded in 1667, is the capital of Russia's most northern region,Taymyr. The Taymyr Autonomous Region covers 862'100 km2 in the Arctic zones.
It lies between the estuaries of the Yenisei and Khatanga Rivers and stretches to the Arctic Ocean.

Altai
is located in the southeast of western Siberia covering 92'600 km2.
Because of its mountainous terrain, it is often called the Switzerland of Russia.

Salekhard
the capital of Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Region founded in 1595, lies directly on the Arctic Circle. Yamalo-Nenets (the end of the earth) is a region in the centre of northern Russia, bordered on the north by the Arctic Ocean, in the east by the Arctic Urals and the Autonomous Regions of Taymyr and Evenkia, in the west by the Komi Republic and in the south by the Autonomous Region of Khanty-Manisjsk.

Tobolsk
founded in 1587, is located at the junction of the Irtysh and Tobol
rivers in the northwest province of Tyumen. In Tobolsk, the tradition
of bone carving began in the 18th century.

Tuktoyaktuk
Tutuujaartuq (looks like a caribou), is located on the Kugmallit Bay near the Mackenzie River Delta. It is the northernmost community on the Canadian mainland.
